About the Appomattox County Historical Society
The business and purpose of Appomattox County Historical Society, is to bring together those people interested in history, and especially in the history of Appomattox County. Understanding
the history of our community is basic to our democratic way of life, gives us a better understanding of our State and Nation, and promote a better appreciation of our American heritage.
The Society's main function is to discover and collect any materials which may help to establish or illustrate the history of the area, its exploration, settlement, development, and activities
in peace and in war; its progress in population, wealth, education, arts, science, agriculture, manufactures, trade and transportation. We collect printed materials, such as histories,
genealogies, biographies, descriptions, gazetteers, directories, newspapers, pamphlets, catalogs, circulars, handbills, programs, and posters; manuscript material such as letters, diaries,
journals, memoranda, reminiscences, rosters, service records, account books, charts, maps, surveys, and field books; and museum material such as pictures, photographs, paintings, portraits,
scenes, aboriginal relics, and material objects illustrative of life, conditions, events, and activities of the past and present.
The Society provides for the preservation of these materials and for its accessibility, as far as may be feasible, to all who wish to examine or study it, to cooperate with officials in
insuring the preservation and accessibility of the records and archives of the county and its cities, towns, villages, and institutions, and to undertake the preservation of historic
buildings, monuments, and markers.
The Society disseminates historical information and arouses interest in the past by publishing historical information in the newspapers, lectures, papers, and discussions, by marking historic
buildings, sites, and trails; and by using the media of radio and television to awaken public interest.
The Society promotes tourism, in and around the County, by holding events that are popular with citizens and tourists alike, either in conjunction with other organizations or separately. Some
of the Society's events include the "Appomattox Oyster & Seafood Festival", the "Clover Hill Village Wine Festival", "Christmas in the Village", and Railroad Festival's "Good Ol' Days"
celebration.
The Appomattox County Historical Society always welcomes new members and volunteers to assist in our efforts, as well as financial support to continue preserving the history of
Appomattox County and our ties to the end of the Civil War and Slavery.
